1te. - (4te.) Lieferung. 4 instalments (= all published). Basel und Genf, H. Georg's Buch- und Kunsthandlung (1864 ?). 20 original photographs (albumen – various sizes ca 110 x 180 mm to 225 x 280 mm) mounted onto white cardboards. Loosely contained in publisher's lithographed wrappers, with calligraphed title on front cover and contents on back cover. Folio (450 x 310 mm). Spine of fourth instalment restored, wrappers lightly dust-soiled and with a few short tears in margins.
Cf. ADB XL, 460-465 (for Wackernagel) ; not in Heidtmann. Bibliographie der Photographie. Jakob Hoeflinger (1819-1892), was a native from the Black Forest region who emigrated to Swiss and became a photographer around 1853. He established his very successful business in Bale in 1857. His son Albert (1855-1936) took over the company in 1885. In 1896 he sold it to his cousin August Höflinger (1867-1939), who had joined the management the same year as he. From then on, August himself devoted himself to portrait painting. Until the end of the 20th century the Höflinger dynasty was running a very successful photographic business. Karl Wilhelm Wackernagel (1806-1869), the editor of this portfolio was a German philologist (German studies), art and cultural historian, active as a professor in Basel since 1833 and one of the founding members of the Middle Ages Collection the forerunnner of nowadays Historisches Museum in Basle. The photographs crisp and clean in sharp and contrasting prints. Scarce with KVK showing only one copy, ETH, Zurich (19 plates ?).
