About This Item
Real photograph printed in gold on a lacquered wooden board, from the Yokohama studio of Mizuno Hanbei, circa 1895. Mizuno patented this process that used a photosensitive adhesive of potassium bichromate, gum arabic and honey to attach gold dust to lacquer. The photograph of geisha and maiko relaxing on a Kyoto riverside terrace was taken by Tamamura Kozaburo. Mizuno's stenciled stamps on reverse.
Photo measures 11 x 8 inches, mounted to a lacquered frame measuring 17.5 x 13.75 inches. Frame cracked along corner diagonals, else all in very good condition.
