New York, 1850. Beautiful painted trade sign, 11 7/8 x 14 inches, watercolor and gouache in gold, black, and several shades of blue, with some remaining traces of pencil outlining, all enclosed within an embossed gilt border. Signed by the artist in lower corner: "I. L. Lazarus / 179 Broadway, N.Y." According to an ad in the Geneva newspaper, May 22, 1847, Newell would be using a newly developed "Letheon Vapor" as an anesthetic; Newell was still practicing at this address in 1860 ( from the "Vulcanite: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Science of Mechanical Dentistry"). The 1848 New York City Directory identifies I. L. Lazarus, "manufacturer of ornamental show cards, and importer of lever watches, &c." at "179 Broadway (up stairs)." A beautiful trade sign for a provincial dentist. Glazed and in an old frame. (11170).
