About This Item

R. Ricciardi Editore, Napoli, 1938 This is a very early work of the prolific Italian scholar of art and architectural history, Roberto Pane, inscribed and SIGNED by Pane on the front endpaper, inscribed to the owner of the book, Lawrence James Wathen, Jr., dated 1945, Napoli. Softcover, printed front cover, bookseller's decorative label on rear cover (Napoli), 8 3/4 x 6 1/2, 37 pp., 11 b/w plates. About good. The book is scarce, and Pane's signature is rare. Paranesi (4 October 1720 9 November 1778) was an Italian artist famous for his etchings of Rome and of fictitious and atmospheric "prisons" (Le Carceri d'Invenzione). "Roberto Pane, an Italian scholar of art and architectural history, died July 28 (1987) in Sorrento, Italy. He was 90 years old. Born in Taranto in 1897, Mr. Pane studied at the University of Rome and, for many years, was on the faculty of Naples University. He became one of the foremost scholars of Neapolitan and southern Italian culture, writing many books and monographs on the monuments and other buildings of the region. His two-volume study of Renaissance art and architecture of the area, 'Il Rinascimento nell'Italia Meridionale,' is considered his most important work. Since 1961, he had also directed 'Napoli Nobilissima,' a scholarly journal founded by Mr. Pane's friend, Benedetto Croce, the philospher. His research interests also included Spanish and Central American architecture and 19th-century French literature." (K074). Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Soft cover. Good/No Jacket.
