About This Item

New York: Franklin Watts. Hardcover. Lady Jane Grey and the House of Suffolk by Alison Plowden. Foxing to edge. Like all the best family sagas, the story of the House of Suffolk is crowded with incident and the clash of personality. It contains romance, passion, high tragedy, pathos and black comedy, all played out byu a richly varied cast of characters, ranging from the stainless Protestant heroine, Lady Jane Grey, to the lovely, wilful princess, Mary Tudor, who enticed Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk into her bed, so that he was obliged to confess to Cardinal Wolsey. 'To be plain with you, I have married her heartily and have lyen with her, in so much that I fear me lest she be with child'. But in spite of this indiscretion, Suffolk kept his special place in Henry VIII's affections, and in his will Henry bequethed the crown, after his own children, to the descendants of his best friend and his favourite sister. It was to prove a deadly legacy, especially to their eldest granddaughter, Jane Grey, the Nine Days Queen. The unfolding drama of the House of Suffolk was of course, heightened by the fact that it took place against a background of great events, and the lives of each and every member of family were directly and fundamentally affected by their connection with the House of Tudor. Although many of their stories have been individually told, this is the first attempt to treat the family as a whole, set in its historical perspective. Illustrated. 201 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Academic and Scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Educational Reference Literature.) . Very Good. Cloth. Reprint. 1986.
