About This Item

London: Frederick Warne and Co., Ltd., 1932. First Printing of the New Edition, Revised and Expanded by the Author. Beautifully illustrated with 16 plates in colour and 72 drawings by A. Reginald Smiith throughout the text and with a large multi-folding map of the Lake Counties. Tall, royal 8vo, publisher's original sepia cloth, the upper cover lettered and blocked in brown, the spine panel lettered in gilt. xvi, 368 pp. A very fine copy, as pristine and essentially mint. AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS PROFUSELY ILLUSTRATED WORK ON THE LAKE DISTRICT OF NORTHERN ENGLAND. The author knew well the hills and dales of the Lake District, from early childhood through adulthood. Elected editor to the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian Society, it was his responsibility to join in frequent pilgrimages to every corner of the counties, to have climbed every hill and swum in every tarn.
Between the printing of the first edition, and this greatly expanded and revised edition, the author reflects on the changes that time brought to the Lake Counties, considering them rich and strange. The illustrator is "so well known to all who love our landscape...". A rich and beautiful book.
