"Messager's style is characterized by fine orchestration (evident also in the ballet music), a gift for easy-flowing melody, often in a waltz rhythm, and a skill in writing music of a dance-like character... [His] contribution to French music, both through his own works and as conductor and promoter of opera, is undeniable, and was recognized as such by his musical contemporaries in many countries." John Wagstaff and Andrew Lamb in Grove Music Online.
