Quarto (11 x 9"). 144pp. Original illustrated brown cloth with gold lettering to spine and dark brown lettering to front cover. This is thus the first edition, first impression, in the secondary binding as noted in Riall. Tissue-guarded tinted frontispiece. Illustrated title with red and black lettering.
Originally published between 1896 and 1902 in "Little Folks," this collection of five stories is splendidly illustrated throughout with twelve full-page half-tone illustrations and 24 in-text drawings with yellow background by one of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration: Arthur Rackham.
The stories featured in this book are:
- The maker of ghosts and the maker of shadows
- The mines of experience
- Harry and Herodotus; or, tales of an old traveller
- The stories of Ben the sailorman
- Stories from the Edda.
Some rubbing to head and tail of spine. Lower corners bumped (not affecting pages throughout). Offsetting and minor foxing to endpapers. Binding in overall good to good+, interior in very good condition.
