London: C. Kegan Paul & Co., 1879. Burton's gold-hunting in Midian and his attempts to enlist the Khediv of Egypt as his partner were a failure, but he produced another fascinating account, filled with keen observation. Here are the two volumes of the First Edition, in a contemporary rebind. [Penzer, pp 96-97; Casada #45]. Red cloth boards with tips and spine in red leather. Clean text; coloured frontis, xxviii, 338 pages. The very interesting illustrations of hierglyphics comprise five of the pages. Textblock is bright and fresh, with a bit of light spotting to a few of the first pages. The lithography are printed on a slick cardstock. Volume Two also has a colour frontis; vii, 319 pages; top-edge is gilt. Indexed; and with the fold-out map, which is complete but has two tears at a fold. Both of the volumes have the front cover present but detached, with the rears tender. The top layers of the spine have been abraided with only a lower part of Volume Two still present. [Please note the condition issues. Quercus must offer these books as Binding Copies, in need of repair or restoration.]. First Edition. Disbound. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
