NY: Grafton Press, 1902. First edition. 8vo. 260 pp. Inscribed by D.H. Jarvis to his mother-in-law. Jarvis (1862-1911), an officer in the U.S.
Cutter Service, 1881-1905, commanded what became known as the "Overland Relief Expedition," during the winter of 1897-98, a 1500-mile rescue operation that saved 300 members of a whaling fleet that had become trapped by the Point Barrow, Alaska, ice; after his retirement, Jarvis worked on various development projects in Alaska. Smith Pacific Northwest Americana 6369. Original gilt-stamped blue cloth (rubbed and soiled); ink underlining through the first half of the text.
