About This Item

[1950 LISTER SINCLAIR PURSUIT OF PEACE UN RADIO ORIGINAL SCRIPT RARE / AVIATION] LAND, SEA AND AIR, episode of the United Nations radio program series "Pursuit of Peace", April 23, 1950, by Lister Sinclair, [directed by Esse Ljungh, noted in accompanying letter, see below], 45 pages original ribbon typescript held together with one paperclip at top edges (as found), 8-1/2" x 11", RARE, only a few records of materials relating to the program in institutional archival holdings and none found for sale (as of 6/28/22)…Lister Sinclair's script opening with lyrics from the Newfoundland folksong "Kelligrew Swarree" is about the crew, work, and mission of an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) weather ship named "Canso" stationed in the "Davis Strait: the great cold channel of ocean between Labrador and Greenland: the path of the bitter Labrador current, and the path, too, of the great storms that detach themselves from the Arctic and slide down into the grey North Atlantic..[Canso] is here because you [underlined] and I put her here…one of the twenty-three weather ships…These weather ships are kept up by the I.C.A.O….an agency of the United Nations…so that the North Atlantic can be made as safe as man can make it…[by] three main functions…report the weather…helping Transatlantic Aircraft…rescue work….", WITH 25 pages of originals and carbon copies of telegraphs, letters, and notes mostly in reverse chronological order from May 9, 1950 back to March 28, 1950, on the production, content, proposed appearances of pioneers and leading figures in the aviation industry, and Lister Sinclair's interest and involvement in the program, mostly notably attempts to obtain a copy of the recording of the program for transcription for mimeographing, first page is a telegraph from S. G.Cooper, ICAO Montreal, to Don Pringle, UN Radio, in full, "Have not yet had disc on 'Land, Sea and Air' show written by Lister Sinclair. Any chance of getting a recording?" with "sent" in red pencil below; second page is a carbon copy of a letter dated 9 May 1950 from J. Donald Pringle to Miss Kimball at the Mutual Broadcasting System, New York City, "Attached is the 'as broadcast' copy of the 'Land, Sea and Air' program, for mimeographing…We would appreciate your running off one hundred copies of this script for us…." [scarcity of online records suggests that this number of copies of the Sinclair script were never run off]; third page is a copy of a telegram dated May 3, 1950 from J. Donald Pringle [United Nations Radio] to Mr. Walter Anderson, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Toronto, "There has been some delay in receipt of the discs 'Land, Sea and Air', but we finally got them OK and also the master discs"; following documents deal with adding credits to the production, regional and changing responsibilities of ICAO considering growth of air travel, getting interviews with leading individuals in the field of aviation ( e. g., Igor Sikorsky, Juan Trippe, Howard Hughes), Lister Sinclair's involvement in the program, Norman Corwin as supervisor of the series "Pursuit of Peace", production costs, script and related papers authenticated as described by seller with lifetime guarantee ///// NOTES: LISTER SINCLAIR, 1921-2006, Canadian broadcaster, playwright and polymath…Sinclair's radio play, Hilda Morgan, broadcast on February 12, 1950, resulted in an uproar in the House of Commons of Canada over its then-taboo subject matter of a pregnant, unmarried woman considering abortion after her fiancee is killed in an accident (although the word abortion was never used)…He was referred to as 'easily the foremost in Canada's array of postwar playwrights' by critic Nathan Cohen; ESSE LJUNGH, 1904-91, theatre and radio drama director/producer born in Sweden…arrived in Canada in 1927 and rose to become one of the most important figures at the CBC. (Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia); PROVENANCE: script and file of related papers acquired at a Gerald Kean (1915-2002) estate sale in Fairfield County, CT…Kean had a long and diverse career in the media during the heyday of radio and the emergence of television eventually supplanting radio…he worked with Norman Corwin, Himan Brown, Allan Sloane, and others shaping the entertainment and news media in the post-World War II decades; CONDITION: all material well-preserved, legible, light wear from limited handling keywords: radio history, Canada broadcasting, post-World War II media, media history, media studies, United Nations radio
