About This Item

Boston: Darnell and Upham, 1892. First. Hard Cover. Small folio sized in forest green cloth lettered in gilt. 148 pps. Folding frontis panoramic photograph "Outlook From The Site of Leif's House in Vineland". Illustrated with photographic plates and folding tissue maps (the author has noted on the illustrations index that some of the illustrations may have been misplaced in the text). A respected chemistry professor at Harvard, Horsford had something of a mania about early Norse discovereis and setlements in North America; many of his writings and maps were criticized at the time and have since been disproven but the basic theory of Norse exploration of American half a millenium before Columbus. In this work he postulates the the "Vineland" of the ancient Norse settlers was in what is now southeastern New England. An exceptionally bright, clean example, some foxing to the endpapers.. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
