About This Item

1873 1ed Richard Burton Lands Cazembe Africa Exploration MAP Royal Geographical

Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was an important explorer and ethnologist. He wrote over 80 books, from travel and exploration to anthropology, archaeology, ethnology, poetry and Eastern Literature.

The Royal Geographical Society published these early accounts of Portuguese journeys into the African interior, 'The Land of Cazembe' with Burton's translations in the wake of increased interest in African exploration due to Livingstone's travels. According to Penzer, Burton had also written two appendices which were rejected by the RGS due to their controversial nature.

This 1873 first edition book of 'The Lands of Cazembe' includes Burton's portion of the book that ends on p. 164. (Penzer), noting that Burton had also written two appendices which, because of their controversial and critical nature, were rejected by the R.G.S. "These appendices, together with a preface were published privately at Trieste in July of the same year." (Casada; Mendelssohn I)
