Light toning to edges and margins. 1" closed tear at bottom of crease. This is a report read at a New York State conference on penal reform in 1902. It was prepared and presented by committe chariman and progressive reformer Eugene Ambrose Philbin, cowritten by 8 other noted activist leaders, including Josephine Shaw Lowell and William Church Osborn. The report admonishes the presence of politics and profiteering in the administration of prisons and charitable organizations, the first seeds of corruption that have now blossomed into America's billion dollar prison industrial complex. This book details a wealth of information on the geology of several regions of the United States, most notably Washington, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Lakes. It is filled with maps and other illustrations. The text is a strange mix, with the majority in English, but a substantial amount in French as well. I can't find a pattern in this, and it is not simply a bilingual printing. Size: 4mo - over 9 3/4" - 12" tall. 529 pp. A few marks on the endpapers, but the core text pages are tight and clean. Front board is literally hanging on by a thread, and should be considered detached. The spine covering is broken in several places and is also in imminent danger of being lost. Later utilitarian quarter calf, spine in six compartments with raised bands with uneven black rules, gilt lettering, sl. rubbed to head and foot; slightly marked cloth boards. All edges speckled. Apart from a little light sporadic foxing a nice crisp clean copy, firmly bound. Priced to accommodate cost of rebacking which would greatly enhance the volume.
