About This Item

London: Henry S. King & Co., 1876. Original pictorial green cloth, embossed gilt titles to spine and front board, beveled edges, painted endpapers, (8.5 x 7 inches). First Edition. xxiv, 380 pages, plus publisher's adverts at rear; 22 illustrations, including tissue-protected frontis. In this work the author recounts his experiences hunting for tiger in the Terai, Assam, and Mirzapore regions, and additional hunts for panther, bear, buffalo and various deer species. He provides in-depth descriptions of animals such as the leopard, red lynx, hyaena, wild dog, Indian elephant, Indian rhinoceros, and antelope, among many others. The second part of the work examines India's sporting bird species. Provenance: armorial bookplate of Allan Octavian Hume on front pastedown. Allan Octavian Hume (1829-1912) was a British political reformer, ornithologist, civil servant and botanist who worked in British India, who founded the party Indian National Congress. He supported the idea of self-governance by Indians. A notable ornithologist, Hume has been called "the Father of Indian Ornithology." Showing some light overall general wear to exterior, internally clean, a desirable copy of a scarce sporting title. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. Tall Octavo. Association Copy.
