About This Item
Germany, 1889. Very good condition. Large stamped chromolithographed scrap with rich, deep color, depicting the winner of the Derby of 1889, the British Thoroughbred racehorse Donovan and his jockey, T. Loates. Run on Wednesday, June 5, 1889, Donovan was trained by G. Dawson at Newmarket. He won by 1 1/2 lengths, with a time of 2 minutes, 44.4 seconds; the prize was £4,050 or about £1,700,000 today! By 1889 his career total was £55,153, by far the largest amount won up to that time.
With intricately die cut profile of the horse and jockey, with the elaborate embossing of the entire horse and jockey. Even the grass below is stamped with a grass leaf pattern. With slight rubbing of the text at the jockey's last name. Tipped on to blue stock. The scrap: 9 x 10"
