About This Item

Jean Anouilh's play about Joan of Arc in a translation by the English playwright Christopher Fry from the French (L'Alouette).
This adaptation was first presented at The Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, on May 11, 1955, in a production directed by Peter Brook. It starred Dorothy Tutin as Joan, Laurence Naismith as Cauchon, the Bishop of Beauvais, and Donald Pleasence as Charles, the Dauphin. The play was also performed later in 1955 in New York, with Julie Harris as Joan and Boris Karloff as Cauchon.
CONDITION: Near Fine, with a bit of rubbing to the spine ends, internally bright and unmarked. The unclipped dust jacket is Good or better, with a small loss to the top of the spine (affecting the letter "A" in Anouilh) and to the top of the front panel, some nicks along the extremities, and some toning to the spine, the flaps and verso of the jacket.

Anouilh seems to claim in the introduction that it's intended mainly as entertainment, but it does add historical insights unavailable elsewhere (as far as I know). For example: People like to talk about Joan as one of the inventors of nationalism, but was she also one of the inventors of humanism?
