London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1949. First British edition. First British edition. 262 pp. Bound in publisher's orange cloth with black spine lettering. Very Good with "Ex Libris" stamp to front board, in an About Very Good dust jacket with a sunned price sticker to the foot, chipped at extremities, slightly soiled and stained.
The African American author's debut novel, written when he was only 21about his military experiences in Berlin. He would leave the US for France where he became part of the Black expatriate community in France with other writers like Richard Wright, Chester Himes, and James Baldwin.
