About This Item

London: Grant Richards, 1922. 1st (3rd repri). h/b. Good, 1st edition (3rd printing, a month after 1st), no d/j, blue buckram boards (some fading and marking), gilt spine and cover titling, text block firm, pages crisp, top edges gilt. Owner's plate on front pastedown.. 18mo (170 x 100 / 6_"" x 4""). Last Poems (1922) was the last of the two volumes of poems which A. E. Housman published during his lifetime. Of the 42 poems there, seventeen were given titles, a greater proportion than in his previous collection, A Shropshire Lad (1896). Although it was not quite so popular with composers, the majority of the poems there have been set to music.

Synopsis

Housman's second and final publication, in which he continues his fatalistic theme begun in Shropshire Lad. Man's only response to such a cruel and dismal life is to bravely face it until death's release. While not as widely known and acclaimed as Shropshire Lad, Housman's command of the craft remains undeniable.
