About This Item
New York: Library of America, 1991. Ex-Library. Near Fine. Hardcover. First Edition.. FIRST PRINTING (stated) of this First Edition (thus) in this acclaimed series. A fine presentation of two of Wright's best later works dealing with race and race issues in America from the point of view of a black man who became radicalized but also disenchanted with the Communist Party, offering a view of life of poverty in pre-WW2 Chicago. This collection contains the full text of Wright's autobiographical 'Black Boy' including the controversial parts removed by previous editors - chronicling his attempts to excape poverty, ignorance, and fear in his native American south. 'The Outsider' is also here presented in full and with previous editorial cuts restored - a novel of a black man attempting to create a new life for himself, exploring themes of existentialism, freedom, and personal responsibility. Hardcover with dust jacket, contains chronological and textual notes, 887pp. A very nice copy, the jacket in a protective cover, tasseled, and with the usual ex-lib markings. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
