About This Item
Edinburgh : Oliver & Boyd / London : Simpkin & Marshall, 1832. First edition. Selected Latin passages, moving on from simple constructions (nominative and verb, adjective and substantive, etc.), to longer and increasingly more complex anecdotes, maxims, and fables, etc., followed by an extensive vocabulary. Generally attributed to the schoolmaster Richard Valpy, said to have been "a mighty flogger", whose large and impressive library was dispersed at auction in 1832. Post 12mo (171 x 102mm). [iv],(224)pp. Contemporary full sheep; sprinkled edges; some minor rubbing and slight wear to corners; a few slight marks, but internally clean and sound, and barring the presence of a number of pencil marks, looking virtually unused. A very good copy of a standard text which remained in print throughout the century.
