Blue leather binding, ornately ornamented in gilt, including inner edges, all edges gilt. Marble endpapers. Binding signed by Mudie. Collects four stories, including two ghost stories: The Laughing Mill, Calbot's Rival, The Christmas Guest, a Myth and Mrs. Gainsborought's Diamond. First edition published in London; there was no U.S. edition of this collection. One of the scarcest Hawthorne titles. Just a hint of darkening to the front board, but a fine, lovely copy.
