About This Item

1812. New York: Pelsue and Gould, 1812.. New York: Pelsue and Gould, 1812. 1812 Laws of New York City [New York City]. Laws and Ordinances Ordained and Established by the Mayor, Aldermen, And Commonalty of the City of New-York, In Common Council Convened, For the Good Rule and Government of the Inhabitants and Residents of the Said City, Passed During the Mayoralty of De Witt Clinton; To Which are Added, The Health Laws of the State of New-York. New York: Printed by Pelsue and Gould, 1812. [iv], 282 pp. Octavo (8-1/4" x 5"). Contemporary sheep, blind fillets to boards, morocco owner label (John B. Coles) to front board, blind fillets and lettering piece to spine. Light rubbing and a few small scuffs and stains to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, front joint cracked, rear board nearly detached, chipping to spine ends, corners bumped and worn, front hinge starting, faint offsetting to endleaves. Light toning to interior, occasional light foxing, early ink underlining and brief annotations to pp. 158-161. $250. * First and only edition. This collection of laws of New York City offers an interesting perspective on a wide range of topics, including gambling, masquerades, trade and commerce, public nuisances, preventing fires, and the firing of guns and transportation of gunpowder. Appended is a collection of public health laws for New York State. The former owner of our copy was likely John B. Coles [1760-1827], a New York flour merchant who served as a 1st Ward alderman from 1797-1801 and again from 1815-1818. Heavily involved in civic life, Coles was also a director of the Bank of New York and the first president of the Eagle Fire Insurance Company. OCLC locates 4 copies of this title in law libraries (Harvard, Columbia, Duke University, Supreme Court Law Library Brooklyn). Not in Cohen. Shaw & Shoemaker, American Bibliography 26266.
