About This Item

"A Leaf of Grass from Shady Hill" with a Review of Walt Whitman's LEAVES OF GRASS by Charles Eliot Norton in 1855. 1928 1st edition; Harvard University Press; Cambridge, MA. With a frontispiece photograph of Norton and F.J. Child "about 1854." From the Preface: "This little book, printed to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Charles Eliot Norton, contains a poem by him, inspired by Walt Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass,' and also his review of that work, printed anonymously in Putnam's Monthly for September, 1855. The introductory essay gives the evidence for ascribing both the poem and the review to Norton, together with a few notes on his attitude toward Whitman in 1855 and thereafter." Norton was an American author, social critic, and Harvard professor whom "many of his contemporaries considered the most cultivated man in the United States." Condition: Clean back cover and spine; tiny, light stain at the top of the front cover; sharp cover corners. Bright gilt on the front cover and spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. There is foxing to the first four pages (up to the copyright page) at the front (heavy foxing on the commemoration page, the title page, and the tissue guard over the frontispiece)...a few pages at the back have some foxing at the outer edge. Page 24 has a couple tiny, dark ink stains at the outer edge. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
