A folio leaf from the second volume of Johannes Gerson's OPERA, edited by Johannes Geiler von Kaisersberg, printed in Strassburg, Germany by Johann (Reinhard) Grüninger, partly with the types of Johann Prüss and Martin Flach, 1488. The leaf measures 310 x 215 mm (12 ¼ x 8 ½ inches) printed in two columns. 53 lines,unadorned Gothic type. The leaf is from the second volumes. Slight browning and soiling, minor staining & small worm bore to outside margin. Very good. See Goff, Incunabula in American Libraries (1964), item G-186. ISTC ig00186000.
¶ Jean de Charlier de Gerson (1363 - 1429) noted mystic and medieval doctor of theology. In 1395, Pope Benedict XIII chose him to the position of Chancellor of Notre-Dame and of the university in Paris. He was one of the most eminent orators of his time, and preached frequently in French or Latin, he was also one of the first to recognize and proclaim the supernatural vocation of Joan of Arc.
