About This Item

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2015. [184] pp, square (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "In the fall of 1965, Lewis Parker received a call from Maclean's magazine offering what was, for him, an unusual gig: accompanying a reporter to Peterborough to cover the Toronto Maple Leafs' preseason training camp, which included the stars of the day: Johnny Bower, George Armstrong, Terry Sawchuk, Tim Horton, Frank Mahovlich, Marcel Pronovost, Bob Baun, Eddie Shack, Dave Keon, Ron Ellis, and Pete Stemkowski. Lewis would spend some time with the team and shoot stills that would run alongside the magazine piece. He owned a Graflex camera, the standard equipment used by the newshounds of the era, and was an excellent photographer, but until then he had never shot for publication. Though it was a career departure, he agreed, and the results of his time spent with the team during training camp are within these pages: beautiful, visually arresting photography that captures the camaraderie and purity of a time in hockey and Canadian history not seen since. With complete, unfettered access to the team and general manager Punch Imlach, his photos (which, once the piece was cancelled by Maclean's, were never used) reflect a wistful, behind-the-scenes moment in the hockey league before it changed forever. Accompaneid by acclaimed writer Stephen Brunt's elegiac and insightful essay on the 1965 training camp - based on interviews with team members - this is the ultimate tribute to the Stanley Cup-winning Toronto Maple Leafs, to a forgotten era of hockey, and to a moment in Canadian history that will resonate with all hockey fans." Some faint areas of glue residue from the manufacturing process on the bottom 2" of each board surface. Dust jacket has some minor edge wrinkling.. Not Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Lewis Parker, photographs..
