About This Item

New York: Harper & Row, 1963. Hardcover. First Edition 12, 308 pp. First edition. Octavo. Original cream publisher's cloth. Black and red lettering on the spine. Textblock also has on the front cover a red star. Top and bottom edge is trimmed; fore edge is untrimmed. A square tight copy. In a fine dust jacket. Dust jacket is not price clipped. A price sticker is still on the front flap ($4.95). Faint pencil markings throughout, otherwise a clean copy in very good condition. A light to medium stain from a newspaper clipping impressed over the author's signature on the front endpaper. Signed by the author and writer Walter Clemons on the free endpaper. Walter Clemons was an editor and book critic for Newsweek. In 1971 he wrote a review calling "Leaving Cheyenne" a "funny, wonderful, heartbreaking book." Clemons' signature is in the upper corner of the front free endpaper of this volume, and pencil markings, presumably made by Clemons, appear throughout the text. On the free endpaper, Larry McMurtry has also signed the book very legibly in blue ink. This is a first edition of McMurtry's great second novel. Despite what the title suggests, "Leaving Cheyenne" was set in Texas, and it includes a time span that stretches across ranching in the 1920s and World War II. 1963
