About This Item

Tubngen: Verlag von C.F. Osiander, 1835-1836 First edition. Contemporary quarter leather over marble boards, gilt-ruled spines in compartments, with simple gilt ornaments. . Two volumes, octavo. With one diagram in Volume I and two duplicate leaves (cancels?) supplied at end of Volume I. Lightly foxed throughout, as usual, due to poor paper quality, small sections of some corners torn, with no loss of text. A very good, attractive set. The publication of 'The Life of Jesus Critically Considered' aroused a storm of controversy; its revolutionary thesis and content were violently attacked, and wrenched out of context ....Strauss's principal objective was to explode not only the traditional orthodox view of the Gospel accounts of the life of Jesus, but also earlier rationalistic views, notably those of H.S. Reimaris. He maintained with unyielding vigour the theory (which has no basis in fact) that the Christ of the Gospels, excepting the barest scraps of personal history, was the unintentional creation of the early Christian Messianic expectations. The miracles, to which he applied the severest and narrowest criteria, were thus largely dismissed as fiction, and his view of the relation of the human to the divine was jejeune. Strauss had expected the onslaught his work received ... " (Printing and the Mind of Man, 300).

About Michael R. Thompson, Booksellers, ABAA/ILAB

Our office is located in Los Angeles on West Third Street, between the Beverly Center and Farmer's Market. Though we gave up an open shop after more than thirty years, we welcome serious customers and dealers. We are normally open from 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, women's studies, education, history of science and fine printing and artists' books. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges. We do appraisals for income tax and insurance purposes. We purchase individual books and libraries. Proprietor: Carol Sandberg
