About This Item

Selins=Grove, PA: Druckerei des "American Lutheran, 1865. Paperback. 8vo. Blue printed wrappers. Pp. 65-128. Very good. Mild wear to outer wrappers, with couple of edhe chips, but overall tight and attractive. Second half only ("Driites und viertes Heft") of this chronicle of German-Lutheran ministries in Pennsylvania by the towering German-born clergyman and missionary Mühlenberg (1711-87). as here collected by Johann Henrich Schierenbeck (1838-97). This influential German-American church association has a complex history: The influential "Pennsylvania Ministry" is the oldest Lutheran church body in the U.S. and created the first Lutheran liturgy; originally called the "German Evangelical Lutheran Ministry of North America" when founded in 1748, it became the "German Evangelical Lutheran Ministry of Pennsylvania and the Adjacent States" in 1792. Only in 1918 did it cease to exist when the three major Lutheran church bodies joined to form the United Lutheran Church in America -- which in 1962 joined other American Lutherans and morphed into the Lutheran Church in America -- which in 1988 transformed into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This is the second half (only) of this account, remember -- but rather scarce in any case. Mühlenberg's journals.
