About This Item
Columbia, S.C.: I.C. Morgan, 1845. 18pp, stitched, moderately foxed. About Good+.
Lieber, a German Jewish immigrant, "influenced political thought more than any one of his contemporaries in the United States, and is to be regarded as the founder of...political science in this country" [Larned 2769]. Lieber says the basics of civilization are "an inevitable result of the relations in which man, with his peculiar organisation and his expansive intellect is placed, to the material world around him."
The physical development of humans, who require "support and protection" for many years, renders the institution of the family "inevitable." And, from the family arises "the patriarchal state, from which the other forms of government progressively proceed."
FIRST EDITION. Sabin 40985n. AI 45-3892 [5]. Not in Turnbull, Eberstadt, Decker.
