Pierre Bertholon was an 18th-century French physicist who is best remembered for his studies and experiments on electricity. These experiments were first published in 1780, most of which were directly related to human health and anatomy. Notably, Bertholon was a close friend of Benjamin Franklin with whom he collaborated on his experiments of the lightning rod!

It was acquired in 1729 by Count Marc-Pierre Voyer d'Argenson, Minister of War for Louis XV, friend of Diderot and D'Alembert (who dedicated the Encyclopedia to him). It housed many famous guests including Voltaire.
