In this text, Bouchot retraces the history of the military costume in France of the Gauls in the middle of the 19th century. The illustrations are by the master Jacques Marie Gaston Onfroy de Bréville dit Job (1858-1931). Job is a French designer and illustrator whose artist name is composed of the initial of his usual first name Jacques and those of his family name. After an early military engagement and studies at the School of Fine Arts, he worked for newspapers as a caricaturist; but he will be especially noted for his remarkable illustrations of children's books. In his large color compositions the cult of the nation's heroes will play a key role. Contents: Prologue, War harness of the old ancestors, Musketeers (XVII and XVIII centuries) , The Marquis, The sans-culottes, The guard, The great army, The whites, The Africans E-196; French Military Uniforms .
