[Japan ca. 1940's].Single sheet brushed letter, 42 x 31 cm., very good, 4 folds, addressed to "Grilli-san," a bit dusty, else verso clean, solid,unusual item, written on Washi hand- made mulberry paper,color painted with flowers and in Kanji. . *** **** *** . . . A LOVELY CALLIGRAPHED LETTER FROM UBUGATA TO ELISE GRILLI . . . WITH COLOR FLOWERS & FLORAL BACKGROUND . . * A letter written in old-fashioned Japanese Oshuji [calligraphy] with color painted red & yellow flowers as a background design on Washi paper. . Written in "running grass" style the letter consists of 13 lines of text. . * Elise Grilli was a Japanese art critic, author on Japanese arts and Japanese woodblock prints. . She and her husband Marcel were longtime Tokyo residents. Marcel wrote a column on music for The Japan Times. Elise was an art critic for the newspaper, she produced books of outstanding merit on the Japanese art scene. They came to Tokyo in the late 1940. . *** CONDITION: The letter is written on laid Washi paper, made from mulberry fibers. The paper is bright white, with cut edges The letter was folded in half twice then in half again. It is currently opened flat. . The paper is bright, clean but a bit dusty at the right end.
