About This Item

Castle, James Town [St.Helena], 17 September 1819. About 400 words on 4 pp. 12 x 8 inches, fine. A rare reference to ‘the Persons at Longwood’ by Lt.-General Sir Hudson Lowe (1769-1844), Governor of St. Helena (1815-1821) and Napoleon’s gaoler. Barry O’Meara, Napoleon’s doctor on St.Helena, quarrelled with Lowe and returned to England in October 1818. In a letter to the Admiralty he suggested that Napoleon’s life was not safe in Lowe’s hands. O’Meara, dismissed from the service, wrote Napoleon In Exile (1822).
