About This Item

Paris, 1931 210 x 135 mm: Two leaves, paginated [1-4]. Pages [2-4] are blank. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ('FNohain'), in French, 80 words, written in purple ink, 14 lines, recto only, on machine-made wove paper headed 'L'Echo de Paris / 6, Place de l'Opéra / Rédaction'. Envelope: 115 x 147 mm, the recto headed L'Écho de Paris &c top left, manuscript address in Legrand's hand to 'Monsieur Victor Moremans / rédr à la Gazette de Liege / 49 rue du General Bertrand / Liege' with 'Belgique' top right, in purple ink, stamped (75c x 2) and postmarked Paris-85 / 19 30 / 24 X / 1931 / Rue Gluck &c. One original fold, paperclip-stain top left, withal fine. *** THANKS FOR A FAVORABLE NOTICE OF LEGRAND'S 'FABLES': Writing from his office at the Echo de Paris to the Belgian journalist Victor Moremans at the Gazette de Liege, Legrand says that he is "well and deeply touched by such friendly and understanding lines as those that you generously agreed to devote to my Fables. They touch me all the more, coming as they do from this dear Belgium where I finished the war, and from this town of Liege where one is not a Frenchman who does not feel immediately 'at home' . . . ." Presumably Moremans had reviewed the new, enlarged edition of Legrand's Fables published about three months before. It scarcely needs saying that fabulists' letters are uncommon, and that letters referring explicitly to their fables are decidedly SCARCE. -- Provenance: Victor Moremans; his sale, Liege, 11 October 1997..

About Jay Dillon Rare Books + Manuscripts

Jay Dillon Rare Books + Manuscripts is a private, research-intensive rare-book dealer of forty years' experience in and around New York, specialized in exceptional books, manuscripts, and cultural property. Jay Dillon has been responsible for selling or appraising more than $100 million worth of books and manuscripts spanning some three thousand years. In 1989 Jay Dillon was the editor and principal author of a richly annotated catalogue that was hailed in the English press as one of the ten best books -- of any kind -- published that year. In 1994 he was invited to narrate the Discovery Channel program on the history of monopoly; and four years later he was consulted by the Zapruder family in connection with their famous film of the assassination of President Kennedy -- which, as it turned out, Mr Dillon valued more accurately than any other appraiser. The firm maintains a wide and productive network of relationships both among private collectors and in the trade; and we are currently engaged in building a number of outstanding private collections for our clients. Books and manuscripts offered to the public are mainly duplicates from our clients' libraries, or otherwise surplus to their needs. Our appraisal services include formal appraisals for insurance, estate-settlement, and tax purposes. For details please contact Dillonbook@AOL.com.
