Letter to Victor Moremans

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ('FNohain'), in French, 80 words, written in purple ink, 14 lines, recto only, on machine-made wove paper headed 'L'Echo de Paris / 6, Place de l'Opéra / Rédaction'. Envelope: 115 x 147 mm, the recto headed L'Écho de Paris &c top left, manuscript address in Legrand's hand to 'Monsieur Victor Moremans / rédr à la Gazette de Liege / 49 rue du General Bertrand / Liege' with 'Belgique' top right, in purple ink, stamped (75c x 2) and postmarked Paris-85 / 19 30 / 24 X / 1931 / Rue Gluck &c. One original fold, paperclip-stain top left, withal fine. *** THANKS FOR A FAVORABLE NOTICE OF LEGRAND'S 'FABLES': Writing from his office at the Echo de Paris to the Belgian journalist Victor Moremans at the Gazette de Liege, Legrand says that he is "well and deeply touched by such friendly and understanding lines as those that you generously agreed to devote to my Fables. They touch me all the more, coming as they do from this dear Belgium where I finished the war, and from this town of Liege where one is not a Frenchman who does not feel immediately 'at home' . . . ." Presumably Moremans had reviewed the new, enlarged edition of Legrand's Fables published about three months before. It scarcely needs saying that fabulists' letters are uncommon, and that letters referring explicitly to their fables are decidedly SCARCE. -- Provenance: Victor Moremans; his sale, Liege, 11 October 1997..
