Chiswick: C. Whittingham for R. Jennings, T. Tegg and Others, 1819. Reprint. Two vols. in full polished calf. Very Good. Two volumes. 16mo. Pp. xii, [1], 2-255; vii, [1], 2-252. Engraved title pages with in both volumes. Editor's preface in Vol. I. Marbled endpapers; all edges gilt. In contemporary full polished calf, both boards stamped in blind decoratively bordered in gilt, raised bands with compartments gilt, and red morocco labels. Some browning to engraved titles. A lovely set. "Goldy," to use Dr. Johnson's colloquialism, first published the fictional letters serially in The Public Ledger, 1760-61. The epistolary novel, inspired by Montesquieu's Lettres Persanes (1721), is presented here in gorgeous, charming bindings.
