About This Item

London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1903. 1st ed. . Blue Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 14 Cms x 20 Cms. f/piece (orange portrait photo(?) of author with tissue guard)+viii+417, 24 ills.ex-pagination, light green floral endpapers, author's sig. verso tissue guard but suspect it is a printed facsimile; lib.stamp 'The Property of the Boots Booklovers Library' recto f/piece, loan sheet to back pastedown with six stamps 1911-1913 overstamped 'Purchased from the Library', long tear to half-title somewhat crudely closed on verso, close tear & crease bottom f/piece, a few faint marks to rear endpaper, a number of slight gutter openings and minor corner and marginal creases, top edge of textblock has a scatter of small reddish brown spots, and textblock slightly cocked, covers clean bar a label removal ghost bottom front, spine a tad dull with ends slightly rubbed. Am unclear if this is original binding or librarey binding, gilt spine lettering a bit too good for lib.binding but no pub.imprint and end-gutters have stitched brown cloth strips which are a little odd. Internally clean and unmarked and a good reference/working copy despite faults. Author was U.S. born wife of French diplomat, ambassador to both Russia and U.K., dying in 1893. There is a slipped in newspaper clipping of the author's later 'My War Diary' (1918) about the First World War (no source given), recently much reprinted.
