Collins Harvill, London - first edition ISBN:0002720949 1991 Hardcover, 6¼" x 9½", with dust jacket Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, barcode etc. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket. Drawing as frontispiece, 20 b&w photographs, glossary, and index. The aristocratic lawyer, Count Helmuth James von Moltke, was a high-ranking officer in Admiral Canaris's Military Counter-Intelligence during the Second World War. A committed Christian, from the moment that Nazism came to power he dedicated his keen intellect, his unremitting efforts and his sophisticated legal skills to "mitigate the consequences for its victims (Jews and Allied prisoners). He acted as a catalyst for dissidence inside Germany and was arrested for treasonable activities, and later executed. These letters to his wife Freya offer a fascinating insight into how the war looked from the German side of the lines.
