About This Item
Edinburgh: Robert Ogle. Good. 1861. First Edition. Hardcover. Xviii + 492, xi + 516, xii + 632 pp + cxxvi additional notes/corrections. Vol. I & II appear to be in original 3/4 leather, which is sill handsome, worn at spine with brown library tape holding boards and repaired corners. Interiors of these two volumes show cracking at hinges with some old tape repairs. Vol. III is library bound in red buckram. All 3 volumes have normal library marks, including pockets and stamps. Otherwise text is clean and unmarked, book blocks are sturdy. A good candidate for rebinding and priced accordingly. Baillie was a Scottish Presbyterian minister and theologigian, and a leader of the 17th century movement that rejected the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer. He recorded his letters, which discuss the reestablishment of the Presbytery in Scotland, the Civil Wars, the trial of the Earl of Stafford, proceedings of the 1643 Westminster Assembly of Divines and the death warrant for Charles I. His letters are a major source for 17th century church history. A nice set, readable as is, an excellent candidate for rebinding. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
