About This Item
Allahabad: A. H. Wheeler & Co., 1891. First edition. Nineteen newspaper articles describing Kipling's life in an area of India semi-independent from British rule. 1000 copies printed and bound with all but 100 reportedly destroyed when Kipling suppressed the book's release but bibliographer estimates there are more. Publisher's purple stamp with "27 Nov 91" dispatch date on endpaper and signature of A. R. Lawrence with short illegible notation and date "25/12/91" on pastedown. Good or better with first gathering literally holding by a thread and covers somewhat soiled and quite possibly touched up. Housed in custom top-loading two-piece sliding blue-and-red cloth slipcase backed in red leather with five raised bands and gilt-stamped lettering and design. Very attractive.
