Scarce first edition of the "Letters of Mrs. (Abigail) Adams" - The Wife of John Adams, with an Introductory Memoir by Her Grandson, Charles Francis Adams. 1840 1st edition (with no edition designation on the title page, indicating a 1st edition - - subsequent editions state "Second Edition" etc. on the title page); Charles C. Little and James Brown; Boston. Complete in one volume (there is no Volume number stated on the title page). With a frontispiece portrait of Adams and a facsimile letter written in her hand.

Condition:
Small cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine and at the corners; bright gilt lettering on the spine. There is separation at the front hinge between the pastedown and end paper (though the front cover and text block are both firmly in place). Crack at the hinge between pages 192 & 193. No loose pages. Sporadic foxing (heavier on the frontispiece and title page); no writing found; the upper-outer corner of the front pastedown is torn; binder's embossed stamp on the front end paper. Both the front and rear end papers and pastedowns have staining.
