Lexington, Kentucky: Published by Abraham T. Skillman, 1833. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 12mo. [1], viii, 207 pages, [1]. Restored. Original brown cloth covered boards. Newer brown paper spine with paper title label. Original end papers with old institutional library label from New Haven Young Men's Institute on the front paste down. Institutional label is covering up an earlier label barely visible underneath. Light edge wear to the binding. Faint previous owner signature top of the right front flyleaf. Light scattered foxing and toning to the contents. Bookseller ticket from 'Williams Bookstore in Boston' located bottom of the blank front end paper.
Rev. Paxton was a Presbyterian anti-slavery preacher appointed minister for the Cumberland Congregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia in 1826. He inherited slaves from his marriage but later freed them causing a controversy in his slave holding congregation. His anti-slavery letters were published after he left the Church. Several copies of this publication are held in institutions. Few auction records found. Scarce in the trade.
