Hachette, 1863. 4to, [iv] 275pp. Red cloth pictorially stamped in gilt and blind: a.e.g. Salmon-colored endpapers; 19 full page b&w plates and smaller illustrations on most of the text pages. Covers lightly rubbed and slightly soiled, spine ends and corners rubbed, expertly rebacked with original spine preserved, else an internally clean, bright copy without any of the usual foxing.
First edition. Known for his imaginative and evocative engravings, Gustave Dore brings wonderful life to these fairy tales about the legend of the boogeyman. Dore's woodcuts display his gift for the dramatic and fantastic.
