About This Item

[SLAVERY & ABOLITION] The Liberator. 4 pages. Vol. XV, No 52. Boston, 26 December 1845. 18" x 24." The newspaper's mission statement is printed adjacent to the headline, stating: "Slave-holders, Slave-traders, and Slave-drivers are to be placed on the same level of infamy, and in the same fiendish category, as kidnappers and menstealers, a race of monsters unparalleled in their assumption of power. Header illustration features white enslavers selling "slaves, horses & other cattle" at auction, while a group of African Americans stand nearby with their heads down. As the image continues toward the right, an Emancipation sign is shown overhead, while free Black men celebrate and wave flags. This Issue of abolitionist newspaper which features a column by Henry C. Wright about his time spent in Germany. Wright was a radical antislavery activist, controversial at the time for his staunch support of feminism and liberationist efforts. Also included in the newspaper is an op-ed with the headline, "The Black Laws of Ohio Ought to be Repealed," which admonishes policy that would incriminate any white person for aiding an undocumented free Black person in finding work or shelter. In one section, Rev. George Bourne is posthumously quoted: "Every man who holds slaves, and pretends to be a Christian or a republican, is either an incurable idiot who cannot distinguish good from evil, or an obdurate sinner who resolutely defies ever social, moral, and divine requisition." Creasing and soiling throughout, some chipping to edges. Small tears to top, not affecting text. Otherwise in very good condition.
