About This Item

London: Longmans, Green & Company, 1908. People's Edition. Cloth. Very Good. People's edition, 1908. A Very Good copy. 8vo., 68 pp., bound in publishers decorated brown cloth with title in gilt on front cover. Spine is faded and chipped at top and base. Previous owners signature inside front cover; a few pages uncut; a few scattered pencil notations. Still a VERY GOOD copy of this classic. ON LIBERTY was first published in 1859. Originally started as an Essay, it grew in size, and published as a book. Among the standards established in this work are Mill's three basic liberties of individuals, his three legitimate objections to government intervention, and his two maxims regarding the relationship of the individual to society "which together form the entire doctrine of Mill's Essay". The nature and limits of power which can legitimately be exercised by society over the individual. ON LIBERTY was a greatly influential and well received work, although it did not go without criticism. Some attacked it for its apparent discontinuity with Utilitarianism, while others criticized its vagueness. The ideas presented in On Liberty have remained the basis of much liberal political thought.

Synopsis

On Liberty is a philosophical work by 19th century English philosopher John Stuart Mill, first published in 1859. To the Victorian readers of the time it was a radical work, advocating moral and economic freedom of individuals from the state. Perhaps the most memorable point made by Mill in this work, and his basis for liberty, is that "Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign".
