About This Item
New York: The International Society 1896-1899. (hardcover) [various pagination]. Very good plus. Vol.1-3 dated 1896; Vol.4-27 dated 1897; Vol.28-30 dated 1898; Vol.31 dated 1899. Vol.1-28 (continuously paginated) 17025p; Vol.29 600p; Vol.30 XXIV, 569p, 117p; Vol.31 IX, 565p. 4to. 31 volumes uniformly bound in green cloth boards. Top edge gilt; fore-edge and bottom edge roughcut. Red leather title compartment at head of spine, compartment double ruled in gilt at top and bottom, lettering in gilt. Boards lightly rubbed with minimal shelfwear; little to no rubbing to tail of boards. Two volumes have minor blemishes to boards: Vol.II top board has a spot of rubbing with slight cloth loss, about the size of a pencil eraser; Vol.XXX top board has a faint stain / discolouration, scarcely even noticeable. Title compartments occasionally rubbed, mostly at edges due to rubbing with adjacent volume. Internally remarkably fine; bright, tight, and clean throughout. Each volume with frontispiece, with the exception of Vol.XXXI, as issued; 14 of which are beautiful colour facsimiles of illuminated manuscripts; Vol.XXX fold-out frontispiece. Frontispieces with protective tissue, printed in red. Each volume filled with many wonderful illustrations, portraits, and monochrome photos (by our count, there are 499 vignette portraits and 200 full-page portraits alone). Several entries augmented with facsimile printings of authors' signatures. P.10165 / 66 Vol.XVII stained, text block entirely legible; not affecting any other leaves. Occasional page unopened, due to roughcut edges. "The Advisory Council" leaf misbound in Vol.III, appearing before title page opposite frontispiece. An exceedingly handsome, if not delightful, set. "Special Edition". Printed by the Werner Company Printers & Binders, by R.S. Peale and J.A. Hill. Associate editors: Hamilton Wright Mabie, Lucia Gilbert Runkle, and George Henry Warner. Vol.XXXI prepared by Edward C. Towne. Given its size, this is a remarkably heavy set. International shipping costs may be prohibitive (indeed, the cost of shipping beyond Canada will easily exceed the cost of the set itself).
