About This Item

Konecky & Konecky, (1994). Octavo, tan boards (hardcover), gilt letters, [xvi] + 496 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: General Early, one of the Confederacy’s most audacious field commanders, tells in his own words of the military campaigns he waged in behalf of the southern “cause.” A West Point graduate and contemporary of Bragg, Pemberton, Hooker, Beauregard and Meade, Early resigned his military commission in 1849 in favor of studying and subsequently practicing law in his native state of Virginia. At the outbreak of hostilities Early volunteered his services and was commissioned a Colonel in the Army of The Confederate States of America. Serving in all the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia, bravely and well, lead to Early’s appointment as commander of the Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley. In 1864 General Early led a daring raid on Washington, D.C. striking within sight of the Capitol. Although soon forced to withdraw, the operation panicked the citizenry and embarrassed the Union’s military leaders. Early’s brave tactics were ultimately no match for the vastly superior numbers of the Union opposition commanded by General Phillip Sheridan. Sheridan defeated Early at the battle of Waynesboro in March, 1865, after which Early was relieved of command by General Robert E. Lee. General Early’s narrative comes to life in troop movements and breathtaking accounts of bravery, determination and commitment in the face of overwhelming odds. Every reader interested in the Civil War or in military strategy and the politics which shape such strategy will find Early’s firsthand account both riveting and informative.
