About This Item
Praha: Gallery, 2000. Book. Fine. Soft cover. First Edition. Quarto, black and white photo-illustrated stiff wraps (trade paperback). 181 pp. including colophon. Translated from the original Czech by Barbara Day and Gerald Turner. A very comprehensive treatment of the history, traditions, living conditions, trades, music, lifestyle and culture of (especially) the Roma (more often known as "gypsies") of Czechoslovakia. Very generously illustrated throughout with striking black and white modern and vintage photographs of the Roma in their indigenous conditions. Many full page and a few double page edge to edge photographs mostly by Jindrich Streiy and Eva Davidova plus a number of vintage photographs and even some musical scores of traditional Roma songs. A series of essays on the various facets of Roma life from music, to crafts and even diet. A very scarce intimate look into an infamously closed and self-protective culture. A very tight, clean, fresh, stiff, crisp, unmarked, unread volume with just a few very superficial rubs to the black edges of the spine. A really negligible flaw, and otherwise with a flat uncreased spine. FINE..
