About This Item

San Francisco: Private Press of Thomas C. Russell, 1925. One of 250 numbered copies signed by the printer. Octavo. xxvii, [1], 316, [1, printer's slug, [1], [2, publisher's ads] pp. plus seven full page mezzotint illustrations. Publisher's quarter linen over brown boards, printed paper spine label, top edge gilt. Original dust jacket with two small chips. Jacket a bit darkened at spine and edges. Extra spine label tipped in at rear. A very good copy in the dust jacket. A wonderful recollection of early Southern California. Alfred Robinson sailed to Alta California in 1829 in the employ of Bryant, Sturgis and Company, a Boston-based firm in the California hide and tallow trade. He married Anita de la Guerra de Noriega y Carrillo, of the locally prominent de la Guerra family of Santa Barbara. The marriage party is described by Richard Henry Dana, Jr., in "Two Years Before the Mast". After the Mexican Cession, and California was annexed by the U.S. in 1848 and became a state in 1850, Robinson worked as a ranch investor and land manager during the 1850s through the 1880s.
