About This Item

RARE 18th CENTURY IRISH PICARESQUE NOVEL
first edition 8vo. [2 (title)], v, [1 ('advertisement' explaining the lack of a subscribers list)], 540pp., contemporary calf, double gilt fillet border on sides, sympathetically rebacked, spine panelled by raised bands highlighted by double gilt fillets and gilt rolled on the band, head and foot of spine gilt tooled, black morocco title label gilt, original endpapers reused, lacks (as usual) terminal leaf of advertisements, faint damp stain at gutter of first few gatherings and at top outer corner of last few, front joint refurbished, sympathetic new morocco title label, very good.
Early name scored out at head of title page, armorial bookplate of the Lord Power and Curraghmore and inscribed on front free endpaper "Ex Libris/ Gulielmi Domi Power/ Baronis de Curraghmore/ Ballydine".
ESTC t70274 (most lacking the terminal advertisement leaf). Loeber Irish Fiction, W117 Collation [pi]4, B-Ll8, Mm4, Nn2.
The hero of this rare picaresque novel spends his early days in Hertfordshire, and after being taken from school is indentured to a lawyer. After a period in London (some low-life detail) he passes the greater part of the novel as a somewhat degenerate soldier in Spain where he is taken prisoner. As the story nears its end he is bound for Jamaica but ends up in Dublin, from where he writes his story. The book is highly entertaining. Wollaston, "probably an Irishman .. may be identified with George Woollaston, an attorney in the King's bench in Ireland c.1734" [Loeber]. It seems probable that many of the travels and escapades narrated in the book are based on his own experience and throughout the novel "there are various references to Irish people and Irish situations in, among other locations, Italy and Spain" [Loeber]. Possibly printed by Nelson for the author.
